The Hidden Impact of Hearing Loss at Work

When people think about hearing loss, they tend to think about hearing.

That sounds obvious, but what I've learned through my own experience is that hearing loss affects far more than your ability to hear.

It affects confidence.

Energy.

Concentration.

Identity.

Relationships.

And often, your ability to participate in the world in the way you once did.

In March 2024, my own life changed suddenly when I experienced hearing loss, tinnitus and other symptoms that I could never have anticipated.

Like many people who receive a diagnosis or experience a significant health event, I initially focused on the practicalities.

Appointments.

Tests.

Treatments.

Possible outcomes.

What nobody really prepares you for is everything that comes afterwards.

The invisible impact.

The listening fatigue.

The effort involved in following conversations.

The exhaustion after social events.

The anxiety of missing information.

The frustration of knowing exactly who you are, whilst suddenly feeling less confident in situations that once felt effortless.

For many employees, these challenges are largely invisible.

Colleagues may see someone who appears physically well.

Managers may assume that because somebody has returned to work, they are coping.

The reality can be very different.

What I've come to understand through both personal experience and supporting employees through significant health challenges is that there are often two diagnoses.

The first is the medical diagnosis.

The second happens quietly afterwards.

Questions about confidence.

Identity.

Work.

Relationships.

How life might change.

At Beyond EAP, we've come to think of this as The Second Diagnosis.

Because whilst medical treatment focuses on health, employees are often trying to adjust to an entirely new way of living and working.

That's where compassionate workplaces can make an extraordinary difference.

At Beyond EAP, we increasingly support employees who are navigating life-changing diagnoses, health conditions and invisible disabilities alongside their professional responsibilities.

Because behind every diagnosis is a person.

And sometimes the most valuable support is helping someone rediscover confidence, capability and hope for the future.

Because every diagnosis deserves understanding, not assumptions. It doesn't have to define the ending.
